The Cambridge Cooperative Club

We are a well-established 10-person housing cooperative between Harvard and Porter Squares in Cambridge. We are a lively and mature group of ten people from 20s to 80s, with a concentration of early thirties folks. English,  Spanish, and other languages are spoken in the house. While becoming a member of the coop is a big commitment (in addition to eating dinner together once or twice a week, sharing chores, spending  time together, we also manage house affairs, have meetings, organize events, and always have lots of exciting things going on), we also have active, independent lives.

Politically, we range from near left to radical, but we are open to ideological diversity. We’re teachers, musicians, activists, writers, photographers, students, scientists, preachers, environmentalists, and dancers. We have some potlucks, host community events and gatherings in the house and hope to have more. Generally, we are a pretty quiet house.  Everyone has their own room. We (unfortunately) do not have furry friends (cats or dogs) due to allergies. Monthly dues include room, food, utilities, wireless internet, etc.  Our dues are much lower than local rents for the area, and we intend the keep the coop an affordable place to live.

We look for ways to make our house more environmentally sustainable (including recent completion of a new roof project and a more efficient heating system, composting, conserving electricity and water, using environmentally-friendly cleaning projects and buying food from organic local farms and cooperatives (when possible) and in bulk.  We are also committed to educating ourselves about environmental concerns, and promoting educational opportunities for the larger community.

We all commit to some specific responsibilities, e.g. house dinners on Wednesdays, house meetings every other Monday night, sharing chores, and some committee work. We also commit more generally to the success and well-being of the house and our fellow housemates, and share broader social justice and ecological commitments.  Many housemates find the coop to be an ideal community in which to learn, discover one’s potentials, and grow.

We welcome  friendly, coop-minded people of any age, race, gender, class, nationality,  religion (or lack thereof), etc. to apply.  We are a Queer-friendly community, and are committed to addressing issues of injustice and oppression in all their many forms and cultivating a loving, supportive community environment.

Process for Recruitment
